Work Experience
I have over 35 years of experience in leading and managing within various technology spaces. I served an Officer in the United States Army from 1983 to 2012 in the communications and information technology fields. During that time, I held many technology leadership roles including the Chief Information Officer at The National Defense University (NDU) and The United States Military Academy; serving as an Assistant Professor at The United States Military Academy at West Point during two tours; and serving as the Director of the Theater Network Operations and Security Center to monitor, maintain, protect, and defend all Army networks within the continental United States.
After retiring from the Army, I worked in consulting companies to focus on driving delivery excellence, especially when leveraging modern communication and collaboration tools, such as those found in Microsoft 365. I have an in-depth understanding of modern workplace capabilities across Microsoft 365 and have a talent in helping organizations understand how collaboration and productivity tools can help them to achieve their business goals from both a technical perspective as well as from getting people to change their behaviors.
Get to Know Me
After growing up in the Midwest and then traveling the world, I retired in Columbus, Ohio in 2012 where I spend much of my time with family and volunteering in various ways with the military veteran community in Ohio. I also enjoy running and bicycling, running half marathons and an annual bike ride across Iowa.
What’s the best trip you’ve ever taken and why?
My wife and I have been with a running group traveling the world, to include Alaska, Southern France, Hawaii, Arizona, Iceland (twice) and Italy. We love meeting up with our friends that have been on all of these trips with us, being able to reconnect every year or so.
What’s your favorite book and why?
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain. Many people in the IT field are introverts, so this book helps to understand the mindset of “quiet” leaders, thus helping one to interact with others in my field.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
“The most important thing I learned is that soldiers watch their leaders’ actions. You can give them classes and lecture them forever, but it is your personal example they will follow.” – General Colin Powell
